10 Good Ways NOT to Let Negative People Affect You

release negativity danielle yeager

We can all get in a funk and need to vent, but you DO NOT want to get stuck there and you DO NOT want to allow other people to bring you there. Avoiding negative people all together is nearly impossible so I want to give you 10 ways you can prevent other’s negativity from turning into your own negativity.

1. Redirect Them.  If someone starts a negative conversation with you, switch it up. Ask them about what was good during their day/about the situation or change the conversation completely.

2. End the Conversation. Guess what?! You have control over who you talk with and for how long. Easiest out ever: “I have to use the restroom.” Then you can use that restroom break as a reset back to a positive mindset.

3. Ignore. If you are around negative people at work pop on some headphones (even if they aren’t playing music) and people will usually leave you alone to do your thing.

4. Lead By Example. Try to catch yourself being negative and say “I am sorry I was being negative, let’s talk about something else.”

5. Hide Negative People’s Newsfeeds. You don’t have to unfriend or unfollow people but you can take them off your newsfeed so you aren’t inundated with their negative posts daily.

6. Avoid Media.  Media is often trying to scare you or gossip about people. It is rare that the news has anything positive to share. Listen and watch things that fill you up, not things that depress you or cause you anxiety.

7. Be Kind. Take the time to do something nice for the people in your life who are negative. It is likely that they just aren’t very happy and some kindness would do you both some good.

8. Attract Positive People. The more positive you are the more you will attract positive people and repel negative people. Negative people want to converse with other negative people. The more positive you are the less likely they will seek out negative conversations with you.

9. Empower Others. If people are always coming to you with their problems then you probably aren’t helping them the right way. Turn the “helping” conversations back on them and help them see how they can help themselves.

10. Unwind and Release. Remember that their negativity can only affect you if you let it. If you cannot avoid or redirect them remember that their negativity is not yours. You are a positive person, smile.

Tell me which of these strategies you are going to use the next time you encounter a negative person in the comments below. Share your story with me I would love to hear it!

  1. These tips are wonderful. I’ve noticed that I easily am affected by other’s negative (or positive) attitudes. I’m learning to not let myself be affected as much by the negative, and this gave me some great ideas to try.

  2. This is awesome! I always always redirect the conversation when it comes to my friends and family. Whenever I feel like the convo is headed towards a weird turn, I asked them “Okay, what was the highlight of your day?” and that makes them think back to what made them really happy or smile today. It gives back those feelings of happiness and joy. Great post Danielle!!

  3. Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was extremely long) so I guess I’ll just sum it
up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.

I too am an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to the whole thing.
Do you have any tips for novice blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
