Here’s a Quick Way to Boost Your Happiness

Several years ago I started hearing about the power of our thoughts to change our health, happiness and well-being and I was a skeptic. I almost felt attacked; how dare someone blame my unhappiness and depression on me?! It made me angry and I pushed back against this idea. It is funny how the things that we resist most are often the things we need the most.

Slowly I became more accepting to the idea that I could change my life through my thoughts during my education in occupational therapy and psychology. I learned that you cannot try to separate out different parts of the body or for our world to be “fixed” or changed, because everything about us is connected. I cannot change my weight without changing my mindset to recognize that I can do it, that I can learn what I need to learn, and it is worth it. Then I need to use that mindset to physically do the work, set up my physical environment to better support my goal and use my social environment to support, encourage and hold me accountable. This is just a small glimpse into all the things that need to go into place to make a goal successful and it all starts with the mindset.

Want to boost your happiness? Get your mind on board!

A quick way to start shaping your mindset and becoming the best version of you is to start journaling. Keeping a journal and actually writing in it…… is a fantastic way to get you in touch with your mindset. You can start by writing about your day at night, writing about what you want your day to look like every morning or my favorite is gratitude journaling.

Gratitude journaling just takes a couple of minutes every night so it is a great place to start.

Give yourself a number (I like 5 but you can push yourself to 10 or start with 1 – there is no wrong answer), then list that number of things you are grateful for from that day. This could be the sunshine, finishing a book you were reading, meeting a deadline, or spending time with friends or family. Another way you can look at this list is as your Success List. Write out your wins from the day (worked out, ate healthy, marked something off the to-do list, etc.). My list is a combo because I am always grateful for my wins.

Share in the comments below 5 thing you are grateful for today.
